From sweet 16 to spectacular 17- Hailing in the new year!
I might be a little late but cannot let go of the customary welcome to the new year and the usual goodbye as I look over my shoulder at the year gone by and reflect on how it was. It is a habit that refuses to let go and I am somewhat glad that it doesn’t. It is enlightening to look back at the past and realise that what seems disastrous was actually not that awful and the ecstasy over certain things was shortlived as well. It changes perspective regarding many things. 2016 started on a very perplexed note. Professionally and personally, choices were difficult. Many hard decisions were taken…

When a doctor falls ill!
While it is very natural for a doctor to fall ill (blame it on the human bodies we too possess!), those around one, find it quite incredulous and amusing. I was recently hospitalized for five days and realized that while being patient comes naturally to a doctor, it is very difficult for a doctor to be a patient! Here’s why: ‘How can you be sick? You are a doctor!’ This is the usual line you get from people around you. Trust me, it is the most irritating thing anyone can say to you. Can someone please tell these people that we do try to stay healthy but if we really…

A Punjabi wedding play-list
Every time I think of the big, fat Punjabi weddings back home, I am drowned in nostalgia of lots of ‘Bhangra‘ music, an endless supply of ‘tandoori‘ chicken and the wide variety of alcohol that can put any liquor vendor to shame! Punjabis are loud, boastful people but extremely fun to be around and good at heart! ( Yes, I am a Punjabi and yes, I am shamelessly praising my kind!) Punjabi weddings are never quiet. From day 1 of the celebrations, temperaments run high throughout the day when the younger ones are scolded for not getting things right and the tent wala for his delay…the ladies are fretting over…

Wife’s serial or your cricket? UC Cricket ends the tussle!
In India, cricket is not a sport. It is a religion with fanatic followers who live the game. Whenever a cricket series is on, you can see abandoned streets and malls. Nothing interests us more than watching our ‘gurus’ and ‘idols’ slash the bat through the air and strike a six. Every boundary is celebrated and every wicket lost mourned. The fever of cricket possesses our nation , especially the men with such intensity that they suffer amnesia during the period and give up on all worldly ties except cricket. Even a term has been coined for the bereaved better halves- ‘cricket widows’ who lose their husbands to cricket. There…

This Friendship Day, befriend yourself!
Friendship day is not far away and soon everyone will gear up to celebrate it in their own individual style. For some, it is a day of celebration with friends. For some, it means calling up old buddies and reminiscing the times spent together. For a few, it is a day to reflect within and grieve the absence of friends in their lives. For the rest, it is just another day created by the Western world and promoted by commercial brands for their own advantage. Well, whatever suits you! I love being around friends but first of all, I am my own friend too. Surprised? Don’t be! I am not…

D.I.Y. – I Did It Yay!
D.I.Y might be Do-It-Yourself for you but for me it is Do-It- (wh)Y? I am very lazy when it comes to the DIY things. I am creatively endowed, don’t you even doubt that and I can sketch and paint very well besides my new-found writing skills 😉 I somehow never have the time. I don’t know…maybe I am juggling too many things or I just don’t have the motivation to implement any D.I.Y ideas around the house. Coming to think of it, I think it is the latter as I live in fauji houses, all of which were probably created decades ago and look like an old hag whose face…

The olfactory sojourn-from smelly to smiley!
My favourite thing about staying in an expensive hotel is the mesmerising aroma in the air that fondles your olfactory cells the moment you enter. I long for a similar one in my house where I am forever battling weird odours. Stinky shoes and smelly socks are the usual culprits but manageable as the stench disappears the moment the articles are removed. I have even mastered the art of tackling the smell of wet towels that my kiddo and husband conveniently leave behind on the bed. Heating milk cream to make ghee is another foul-smelling necessity that my maid is instructed to perform while I am at office. There are still some wicked smells that just don’t go…

The everyday celebration called life!
I aim for stars of the sky Ignore but flowers that grow nearby. For showers the Lord I do beseech Treasure not, dewdrops within my reach. Bet my life on a single dream While realities slip by as a stream. Being ambitious is being progressive. The dreams we dream and the goals we aim for, drive us forward in life and let us achieve great heights. However in our pursuit of these goals, we oft ignore the little joys around us. Instead of celebrating the event called life itself, we look for ‘bigger‘ reasons to celebrate. Maybe it is due to the fast paced life we are leading or the…

The six you should not miss-#CrashthePepsiIPL ads!
Pepsi has always been more than just a cold drink! The folks at Pepsi really know how to rope in the masses and make every activity they are involved with, a very fun-filled extravaganza. Last year,it was internship with Pepsi and this year, they have provided a platform to all budding directors and aspiring actors (who doesn’t dream of being one?) to showcase their talent and be featured on television. Pepsi ads have forever been my favourites, from ‘Yehi hai right choice baby!’ through ‘Ye dil maange more’ to ‘Oh yes, abhi!’ This year cricket fever is back with a vengeance, the IPL following World cup and Pepsi has aptly come up with…

The Walk
I recently started the evening walk ritual with a friend just to stay fit and ok yes, also for the daily dose of gossip we both share. We chose to walk the ‘the walking plaza’, a term every army-wife would understand. For the rest, let me explain-it is a stretch of road inside a cantonment, lined by picturesque trees which is closed to traffic for specific hours in the morning and evening for walking. Oh and yes, every lamp post has a speaker mounted on it and music plays during ‘walking hours’. Sounds amazing, right? The initial few days were spent trying to just complete the circuit, either one not willing to surrender. We…
